The Eagles got back in the win column but questions remain…
Let’s focus on the three most pressing questions.
First, what is wrong with the offensive line, especially the left side? Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson are supposed to be the strength of this unit and the Eagles cannot run the football at all behind last year’s pro bowlers. Inconsistency would be an upgrade at this point, or even not holding their block long enough. Instead, both guys are getting beat immediately off the ball. Saquon Barkley is contacted behind the line of scrimmage on most of his carries this season. People want to question if something is off with Barkley but anyone watching can clearly see he has no room to run and no time to make a defender miss. It’s an unbelievable fall for a line that has been so dominant for the last half decade. I’m not in the NovaCare Complex, so maybe it’s a scheme thing. Regardless, Mailata and Dickerson have proven they are talented enough to excel in any run scheme, so for the two of them to be this bad for this long is perplexing and very worrisome. The Eagles cannot be a one dimensional offense.
Second, when will we see the Eagles execute a sustained, punishing drive that defined their 2024 Super Bowl run? This is heavily related to question one, but it’s a real problem for a team with a defense that lacks depth and is dealing with injuries. The Eagle offense must control clock and score points. Philadelphia has lost the time of possession battle by eight minutes or more twice in the last three weeks. They can’t run the football for 1st downs. Outside of the Tush Push, they can’t run against stacked boxes. They can’t even run against a light box. According to Stathead Football, the 2024 Eagles had 34 drives of ten or more plays. 79.4% of those drives resulted in a score. Through seven weeks, the 2025 Eagles have zero drives of at least ten plays. ZERO.
Third, do the Eagles need to make a change at offensive coordinator? I don’t know of any instance where a midseason change at coordinator has ever worked. The Eagles even did it two seasons ago and it did nothing to slow their rapid descent. On the other hand, this is a loaded roster with many players in their prime. Do you risk wasting an entire season if you know the offensive coordinator is not good enough to get you where you want to go? The scheme is bland. The run game is DOA. Only explosive pass plays pull this offense out of the mud. Last week, Jalen Hurts completed two passes to AJ Brown of more than 35 yards. One was on 4th and 1 and the other was to keep the game sealing drive alive. That’s not how good offenses operate on a regular basis. Deep balls are a Hurts strength but they are a low percentage play. Churning out 1st downs on the ground in those situations is the best form of offense, as demonstrated by the 2024 Super Bowl title.
Getting back on the winning side in Week 7 was great, but it doesn’t appear much was fixed from an offensive standpoint. The bye is next week and major changes and/or improvements must be made if the Eagles are going to make a realistic title defense.
